John Atkins “paints pictures with his voice.” Known both for his dramatically intense characters and for the sheer beauty of his voice. His main objective is to clearly and honestly tell the story of whatever piece he is performing.
Mr. Atkins has performed with many distinguished opera companies including more than 300 performances with the Los Angeles Opera alone, plus leading and supporting roles with the Seattle Opera, Santa Fe Opera, New York City Opera, Opera Pacific, Boston Lyric Opera, and Dallas Opera. Some of his most successful roles include Sharpless in Madama Butterfly, Count in Le Nozze di Figaro, Enrico in Lucia di Lammermoor and Eisenstein in Die Fledermaus.
His orchestral repertory includes, Copland’s Old American Songs, Carmina Burana, Mahlers’s Songs of the Wayfarer Britten’s War Requiem, and An Evening of Rogers and Hammerstein with orchestra and chorus. John has recently sung with the Long Beach Opera in Cherry Town, Good Soldier Schweik, and Camelia la Tejana, and as soloist with orchestra in Dona Nobis Pacem by Vaughn Williams and Mahler’s Kindertotenlieder
John also sings Broadway and has just finished and exciting run of Joe Boyd in Damn Yankees at Cabrillo Music Theater.
